GOOD NEWS

Biden’s in Town -President Biden is hopping into town next week to highlight the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill –  the new $16 BILLION dollar underwater tunnel to connect NY and NJ via Amtrak. Plus…the new Madison Station opens tomorrow, bringing the LIRR to Grand Central! East sideeee!

Wanting to Start a Business? Good News – The NYC Small Business Opportunity Fund just launched this week, offering startups, growth-stage, or small businesses loans up to $250K especially for BIPOC, female businesses. Bye VC!

BAD NEWS

Cults, College and a Dark Storied Past – If you’ve got 20 mins and want to read an insane true crime esq article, read about the ringleader of a sex cult at Sarah Lawrence College. Editor’s Note: It is a good thing he got sentenced, what he did was bad…which is why it falls into Bad News today.

Union Square Movie Theatre is Closing Down – Regal Cinemas, which filed for bankruptcy last year will be shutting down 39 locations across the nation, including the 14th street location. Goodbye theatre, hello laptop.

2. SO ARE THEY TAKING OUR GAS STOVES AWAY?

Last year, Governor Hochul announced a $50 billion executive order to fight climate change in NY. It is the nation’s most aggressive bill on climate change (you hear that California?), tackling issues like single use plastic and recycling.

Additionally, a 2019 climate bill calls for a 40% reduction in the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030. That’s a lot of work to turn the entire state towards renewable energy

The biggest issue at the moment, is gas stoves. While many media sites are putting out headlines that they’re going to take your gas stoves away (umm, they’re not), here’s what you SHOULD know about the gas stove melodrama.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?
As part of Hochul’s climate change initiative, a new state budget proposal has been put forth that would require new buildings to be all-electric beginning in 2025. This means no more gas stoves only in new developments, 2 years from now.

The media has been stirring the pot, drawing the story into a contentious battle between Hochul and politicians, including the New York Post which made the most ridiculous cover page. This story should more so focus on the impacts of climate change, and what NY is doing to mitigate that.

WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK?
Mayor Adams is against the electric stoves, “Those of us who are good cooks – you know, people don’t realize that electric stoves can’t give you the right setting when you are cooking something that – if you’re a good cook”.

House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who apparently loves alliteration, said, “This is Hypocrisy Hochul at her finest” after discovering Gov Hochul still uses a gas stove at her home.

What do you think of Gov Kathy Hochul’s measures? Tell us your thoughts!

OH HEY, HELLO, ciaooo!

3.  DONATE TO EVERYTOWN TO END GUN VIOLENCE

While New York has the second strongest gun laws in the nation, in an average year, 870 people die by guns in New York.

In light of the horrible shootings in California this past week, we would like to encourage you to donate, get involved or learn more about what you can do to end gun violence in the US.

BAD NEWS

Can’t we all get along? – Over 7000 nurses went on strike today after the Nurses Union failed to negotiate with the hospitals despite 8 other hospitals accepting the raise.

THE STATS:

1,044,172 vaccines bivalent vaccines

4,459 new cases – not updated since Dec 30th

GOOD NEWS

Enough with the Expensive Shoeboxes!  Gov Hochul announced Housing as one of her main goals for 2023, including a 5-year, $25 billion housing program that will produce 100,000 units. We’re tired of the mini-shoebox apartments!

City Hall Plans to Shut Down Rikers – But the question is will Mayor Adams approve? Conditions in the jail are at their worst with 19 deaths last year, and staff shortages of 65%. Whatever happens, it seems criminal justice reform is at the top of City Hall’s list.

BAD NEWS

Oh Hey! It’s Congress, We’re Just on Hold…Again  Republicans are at a standstill for the vote over Speaker of the House. 19 Republicans are holding back from voting for Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Voting can go on forever until someone is elected…meaning Congress can’t kick off until a speaker is elected. Just roll the dice and vote on someone.

2. HOW TO SET YOUR GOALS FOR 2023

Step 1: Write them down! Some people say putting ideas to paper can sound like an activity for members of Oprah’s Book Club BUT we say, putting it to paper means you’re actually spending time on the goal. You’re spending time problem solving, focusing on how to make it a reality.

It’s like fixing a car or figuring out a rock wall or puzzle – you have to spend time thinking about it. While you might not need to dedicate the Malcolm Gladwellian 10,000 hour average of becoming an expert to every goal, it would make sense that you’d have to dedicate more than a fleeting moment here and there.

BUT WHAT SHOULD I BE SETTING?
Real quick on the goals for 2023. Sure, losing 10 lbs or having an extra $1000 in your bank account is great, but I want you to think about one thing, which is…are these goals bringing you closer to the person that you would like to become?

We often think about what we want to accomplish in metrics, but it’s not always guided by the TYPE of person we want to be.

According to America’s OG hipster philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation”. Much of the strife that we feel as humans is not because we didn’t get that perfect job, but because of misplaced value. We equate our success as human beings to C level suite jobs, Instagram perfect relationships, and the newest crop of iPhones.

We live our lives based so much on how society tells us to live, that we’ve inadvertently buried our own selves, that we no longer know who we are, or who we want to be, and worse how to find out.

SO, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The only way to find out what type of person you are, who you are is to do the things that you want to do.

So look at your list of accomplishments of 2022, look at the tangible goals that you have for 2023, and ask yourself…do these accomplishments define me? Or the future me? Are these things that help to get me closer to the type of person I want to be? Do I actually ENJOY doing these things?

You’ll have a gut check on how you feel. Even if you don’t know exactly what that is, you have some semblance, even if it’s tucked deep into the recesses of your jaded, sarcastic and blackened New York City heart. Check out our full guide in the link below.
