THROWBACK MACHINE

2. SO…WHAT WAS NYC LIKE IN THE 2000’S?

This week we’re taking a deep dive into the ciaooo! mag time machine and entering the 2000’s, when Giuliani was Mayor, texting was revolutionary, and Shaggy dominated the radio waves.

A QUICK RECAP ON THE TOP HITS OF NOVEMBER 15, 2000
  • Top TV Show: Survivor
  • Top Radio Hit: With Arms Wide Open – Creed
  • Top Movie: Charlie’s Angels
  • Top Phone: Nokia 3310
  • Top Music Player: The iPod comes out
  • Top News: The controversial election between George Bush vs Al Gore, the Mad Cow Disease Outbreak and controversy over background checks on gun control.
  • TRL Guest: Marilyn Manson

WHAT WAS NEW YORK CITY LIKE IN NOV. 2000?

The year is 2000. Hilary Clinton has just been elected to the NY Senate and Mayor Giuliani is at the helm. NYC’s crime level is at a historic low. After 7 years of a consistent downward trend on crime, NYC has become the safest large city in America.  But what was it that made NYC so safe, compared to today? Before Giuliani’s Trump fused fiasco, Giuliani was once respected for cleaning up NYC’s streets. His aggressive, albeit controversial and racist policy included cracking down on all crimes, from minor ones like subway-fare beatings (155,000 ppl were jumping turnstiles everyday) to taking down mafia bosses. According to police commissioner Bernard B Kerik, their “Quality of Life Initiative 2000” was one of the most “successful public safety efforts ever undertaken”. In Giuliani’s time he granted some progressive reform including:

  • Protection for undocumented immigrants and allowing their children to go to school.
  • Domestic partnership rights for gay and lesbian New Yorkers.

Fun Fact: Giuliani was credited with popularizing the perp walk, or public shaming and parading of suspects in front of the press.

Controversially, he also employed incredibly racist tactics like “Stop and Frisk” which targeted people of color. He was known for supporting the NYPD despite the horrific shootings of innocent black men like Amadou Diallo.

SO HOW DIFFERENT IS IT FROM TODAY?

Apparently, not much more. Replace Giuliani with current Mayor Eric Adams; you’ve got some parallels. Both were government veterans, with Giuliani as former District Attorney and Adams as Police Commissioner. Both believe in being “tough on crime,” whose solutions mainly fixate on adding more police to the streets instead of implementing more social services or establishing relationships between communities and the NYPD.

Over 20 years apart, both have been accused of targeting the homeless and throwing them off the streets.  While Giuliani was credited with making NYC safer, he had a lot of factors supporting him, including a growing economy nationwide, the end of the crack epidemic, and an influx of immigrants boosting the NYC economy.

There are some significant differences, though, including the legalization and standardization of cannabis, an influx of climate change initiatives, and an incredibly diverse population that has and can implement real change! We’re excited to see what happens next! What do you think? Feel free to write us back!

First Female Commissioner of the FDNY Starts Today-    Laura Kavanagh, 40, became the the 34th commissionerfirst woman and youngest fire commissioner to lead the FDNY. This comes nearly one year after Mayor Adams appointed Keechant Sewell as the first female commissioner of the NYPD.

2. WHAT’S ON THE BALLOT THIS YEAR?

IT’S VOTING DAY!
Today, you, yes, you and millions of other voters will help to shape the future of America. If that sounds dramatic, it’s because it is! And it is absolutely true!

Today, we’ll be voting on Congress, state houses, governor’s seats, local offices and here in NY, ballot measures surrounding issues like the cost of living, climate change and racial justice.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT THE MIDTERMS?
Just like high school, midterms are essential to the trajectory of your school year, or in America’s case, the next presidential election. How we do in this election will dictate what party will be in control of the House and Senate. If you want a little refresher on what this means, check out our handy guide (with pictures) to the elections here.

According to the Cook Political Report, 212 districts are leaning right, and only 187 are left leaning.  A party must win 218 House seats for a majority, and we’ll find out shortly who will be the next majority leader.

MEANWHILE, IN NEW YORK CITY
There are over 4.9 million active voters in NYC, yet, only 18% or about 884,000 people have voted as of this morning. As mentioned in our last newsletter, this year’s midterms are especially contentious as several Democratic-held offices like Oregon, Nevada, Wisconsin, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, and even New York could potentially swing Republican. It’s a tight race.

SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU?
In NYC, we’re keeping our eyes on the Hochul (L) vs Zeldin (R) race for governor, which will impact abortion rights, climate change, affordable housing and crime. Here’s a very brief breakdown below:
  • Abortion Rights  – Hochul is pro-abortion, whereas Zeldin co-sponsored legislation that would ban most abortions.
  • Crime – Hochul supports limits on gun ownership. Zeldin is for gun ownership. He also plans to suspend bail reform & implement a harsher stance on crime, making safety one of his top priorities.
  • Affordable Housing – Hochul has a five-year, $25 billion plan to create 100k new homes. Zeldin has not put a plan in place yet.
  • Fracking – Hochul is against fracking upstate. Zeldin is pro fracking due to the number of jobs and boost to the economy.
  • Taxes – Both candidates have pledged to cut taxes but Zeldin wants to remove income tax entirely in NY.

So, make sure you go and vote! Have any questions – feel free to write back and we’ll respond!

OH HEY, HELLO, ciaooo!

BAD NEWS

GIVE US THE SCOOP

2. WHAT’S ON THE BALLOT THIS YEAR?

Y’ALL. SO MUCH IS HAPPENING THIS ELECTION.
This year’s midterm elections are volatile! For the first time in 20 years, it seems NY may be in danger of turning into a…red state! In a post-pandemic city with rising crime, rent and gas prices, New Yorkers are turning to Republican candidates in key districts. That’s why it’s more important than ever that you vote.

FYI: Early voting is happening now and ends Sunday, Nov. 6, two days before Election Day.

WHO’S ON THE BALLOT?
  • Governor:  Incumbent Kathy Hochul (D) is going against Lee Zeldin (R). Polls are showing a close race.
  • Senator:  5 Time Senator Chuck Schumer (D) is running against Joe Pinion (R).
  • Attorney general: Current AG, Letitia James, is running against Michael Henry (R). Letitia James is known for filing lawsuits against Trump for lying on his taxes & the sexual assault claims against former Gov Cuomo.
  • State ComptrollerThomas DiNapoli, faces a Republican challenger, Paul Rodriguez. DiNapoli discovered $66m in fraudulent purchases by the NYC Ferry system.
  • State Senate and Assembly Seats – Over 26 seats are up for grabs this election, and in neighborhoods like South Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Hudson Valley, Republican candidates are inching closer to the finish line.
AN ACT TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE
You’ll also be asked whether to approve the Environmental Bond Act of 2022, aka The “Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act”. This would allow New York to borrow up to $4.2 billion, through a bond issuance, for projects related to greenhouse gas emissions, flood risk, clean water, land conservation, and other climate-related matters. The last Bond Act was passed over 20 years ago.

Critics argue that NY is already in debt and doesn’t need more. While literally everyone else who has some semblance of care for the planet and the future of NY has approved of it. Even the fiscally conservative state comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli has approved of it.

A BALLOT PROPOSAL FOR RACIAL JUSTICE?
Ballot proposals allow you to vote directly on an issue. They are brought to light by elected officials. This year, you can expect ballot proposals on racial justice that will:
  • Add a Statement of Values to Guide Government – apreambleto all city charters to add the value “just and equitable city for all”.
  • Develop a new city agency and commission specifically for improving racial equity.
  • Measure and create a new “true cost of living” specific to NYC and not the nation (since we all know NYC is much more expensive than say…Charlotte).
SO WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO?
LOTS of big issues are in the midterm elections this year, so make sure you go out and vote!

OH HEY, HELLO, ciaooo!
