A LITTLE CONVERSATION STARTER

2. SO WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH MONKEYPOX?
For today’s issue, our reader Daniel D. wrote,
“The articles I’ve been seeing did not educate me on Monkeypox. It just says Monkeypox is here, there’s a lot of cases, we are working on it. But what does this mean for me?”

WHAT IS MONKEYPOX?
First, let’s talk about what Monkeypox is not. Contrary to the name, it was not transmitted by monkeys. It does not affect only men who have sex with men (MSM). Monkeypox is closely related to Smallpox – and symptoms include rash, lesions, fevers, exhaustion, swollen lymph nodes and more.

Monkeypox was originally transmitted by rodents and was contained primarily in West and Central Africa for decades. Scientists are now trying to figure out how this outbreak has spread to the US, with California, Illinois and NY reporting 47% of all confirmed Monkeypox infections in the US. All 3 have declared a state emergency over Monkeypox.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES I’LL BE AFFECTED?
At the time of writing, over 98% of those currently affected in the US are within the MSM community, but can be spread to and from anyone.

While some are quick to jump the gun and blame the community or think they are safe, virologist John Skylar, PhD suggests, “It is worth mentioning that the MSM community are often hyperaware of their sexual health given the devastating events of the AIDS crisis, and it could simply be that Monkeypox is spreading among many communities and this is the one that we actually have good data about”.

Your biggest risks are from skin-to-skin contact, sexual contact with an infected person and sharing sheets, clothes or touching something that someone infected came in contact with. Best to avoid large crowds, kissing strangers and sharing beds with anyone with pustules.

WHO SHOULD GET THE MONKEYPOX VACCINE?
According to the CDC, If you have been in contact with someone who has Monkeypox or in an area that has a high amount – it is best to get vaccinated within 4 days. Since there are limited supplies it is relegated to cases at high risk of exposure.

THE WHO declared Monkeypox a global health emergency last month. Over 21,000 cases have been reported in 78 countries but for many, cases will dissipate within 2-4 weeks on it’s own and mortality is considered very low.

A LITTLE PIZZA HISTORY

2. 🍕 PIZZA WITH A SIDE OF…HEROIN?
Today we’re sharing the dark backstory behind Original Ray’s Pizza. If you’ve ever wondered why there are so many “Original Ray’s” Pizza…here’s the story!

HOW DID RAY’S GET IT’S START?
Ray’s was opened on Prince Street, Manhattan, in 1959 by Ralph “Raffie” Cuomo, a 22- year Sicilian immigrant who used his mother’s recipes to bring an authentic feel, and more customers, to the shop.

Not too long after opening, the restaurant became a hangout for the “Prince Street Crew” and their narcotics operation, headed by the Luchese crime family.

AN UNDERGROUND PIZZA DRUG DEN
According to the FBI, Ray’s and another Brooklyn butcher shop were responsible for moving tens of millions of dollars worth of Cocaine and Heroin throughout New York. Rumor has it the drugs were hidden under the pizza ovens. At one point, Cuomo was even caught with $25 million worth of Heroin in his car trunk.

Despite his drug stints, Ray’s was still incredibly popular for its pizza – which inspired a bevy of copycats including Famous Ray’s, Original Ray’s Pizza and a One and Only Famous Ray’s.

ORIGINAL RAY’S TODAY
Cuomo was eventually arrested and passed away in prison in 2008. His family sold the building which today holds Prince Street Pizza! While the drug past is long gone, you can still grab a slice…if you make it past the lines.

2. WHAT DOES ROE V WADE MEAN IN NYC?
As the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V Wade has started to make its mark across the country, questions have circled on whether it will happen in NY.  Here’s a quick FAQ on Abortion in the state of NY.

WILL ABORTION REMAIN LEGAL IN NY?
In NY, abortion is available up to 24 wks of pregnancy. After 24 wks, you can still get an abortion if your health is at risk or your pregnancy will not survive. “Abortion has been legal under  New York State law since 1970 – three years before the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion throughout the country. Because the right is codified in New York State law, federal decisions to limit access to abortion will not impact New York State”. – NY State Both Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams have repeatedly put out statements to protect access to abortion in the state of NY.

CAN OUT OF TOWNERS GET AN ABORTION?
Yes. NY will welcome out of towners to come here for abortion care. It is also illegal to prevent anyone who is seeking reproductive health care services as well.

WHERE CAN YOU GET AN ABORTION?
NYC’s public hospitals offer abortion services, including via procedure or medication. To learn more call 844-NYC-4NYC or visit here.

WHAT IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD IT?
There are plenty of groups that will assist you anonymously. For payment assistance call the NY Abortion Access Fund at 212-252-4757. You can also reach out to the Brigid Alliance or the Haven Coalition for assistance with overnight lodging or payment.
