THE BAD NEWS
When Marijuana Legalization Became a Puff Puff Fail – After former Governor Cuomo legalized marijuana in NY earlier this year, the move to regulate marijuana in New York was stymied by a loooooong delay due to…..indecision? “We lost five and a half months because there was not a decision simply to name an executive director and a chair person.” said Governor Hochul. Less than a week after taking over, Governor Hochul will jump start conversations to jump-start the marijuana cultivation, distribution and sales program created in March. Seems like someone was smoking the ganja…
WE’RE STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMIC, WHY DID THE SUPREME COURT RULE AGAINST EXTENDING THE EVICTION MORATORIUM?
On August 12th, the Supreme Court ruled the Federal Eviction Moratorium “unconstitutional” since the process didn’t give landlords any way of responding to tenants. The blanket moratorium protected tenants, but gave no protection to the landlords. For hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, this means that they can be taken to court at any time after the expiration on August 31st (today!).
ARE THE COURTS TAKING NEW CASES?
Yes, they are. Right now, courts are scheduling hearings both virtually and in person. Cases filed before, during and now, during the Pandemic. This means that if your landlord wants to file a new case against you, you may be taken to court. According to Princeton University, there is a backlog of over 50,000 cases, the most in the entire nation.
DOES THIS MEAN I WILL BE EVICTED?
If you apply for rent relief, you can’t be evicted while your application is being processed, and if you’re approved, you can’t be evicted for a year. If you’re unsure, you can always receive assistance from a pro bono lawyer through the city’s Right to Counsel program if you meet the right income requirements.
The annual fair takes place in the Syracuse suburb of Geddes, where it occupies a 375-acre campus, and runs for 18 days in August and September (this year, it extends from Friday, August 20 through Monday, September 6). Get ready for carnie sideshows like Sinbad and the High Dive, and Hilby the German Juggle Boy. If you’ve never made the trip upstate…well, maybe now’s the time to go!
