You May Be Saving $4,661 a Year by Working From Home– Manhattan commuters are spending less on food, excursions and happenings around their offices by working from home! Good for your wallets, bad for the city. But hey, at least you can get guac on the side now!

BAD NEWS

There Goes the Social Services –The Commissioner of Social Services, Gary Jenkins, is stepping down after a year on the job. His role oversees the city’s homeless shelter system, which has recently been under fire due to the city’s hardening on mental health and migrant crisis. Let’s just say we need someone to fill the role more than a rat czar!

2. BEFORE TINDER, NEW YORKERS HAD TO FIND LOVE IN TAXI DANCE BALLROOMS

BY KEITH TAILLON AKA @KEITHYORKCITY

It’s Valentine’s Day! Whether you’re cuffed up, chuffed up or choked up, there’s nothing to satiate your curiosity than the “wooing” methods of lonely New Yorkers back in the day. Read about NYC’s salacious past with love.

HOW DID PEOPLE DATE BACK IN THE DAY?
There’s something about the notion of being “alone in a crowd” that rings particularly true for many people who wind up in this writhing metropolis. If you were a lonely man in New York in the first half of the 20th century, you could combat this urban loneliness by going to one of a number of “taxi-dance ballrooms.”

THESE DANCE HALLS WERE DESIGNED FOR “UNATTACHED MEN WHO YEARN FOR THE VOICE AND SMELL OF THE FEMALE SPECIES”

Clustered in and around Times Square, these dance halls were designed specifically for “unattached men who yearn for the voice and smell of the female species,” offering dances with girls for hire.

In December 1938, a reporter with the New Yorker visited several taxi-dance ballrooms (so-called because of the girls, like taxis, getting paid by the minute). He first visited Honeymoon Lane on the 2nd floor of 711 7th Ave.

He received one free dance ticket from the sidewalk barker outside, then ascended the stairs and was cleared by the bouncer. Inside, he found “eighteen or twenty girls in evening gowns, lined up behind a low rail opposite the entrance,” who quickly cried out to him in desperation to be his dance partner.

End of Vaccine Mandate 2021-2023 – The vaccine ultimatum which led to 96% of vaccination rate across all city employees has come to an end! The city’s health commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, said that “It’s clear these mandates saved lives and were absolutely necessary to meet the moment”

Delancey’s Desperately Needed Makeover – The Department of Transportation secretary Polly Trottenberg plans to give Delancey street a $21 million dollar upgrade by decreasing the number of lanes. A much needed “road diet” given that 200 crashes have occurred in the last decade. The extra space is going to be designated bikes and pedestrians…Who’s got their bike ready!?

BAD NEWS

Don’t Be Like Vickie –  Paladino, who represents Queens, granted $10,000 in City Council discretionary funds to Bridge to Life, a Queens-based anti-abortion crisis pregnancy center.  A crisis pregnancy center like Bridge to Life  poses as a women’s health center with the intention to convince them to not abort. Did you know, that in NYC these crisis pregnancy centers outnumber actual abortion clinics.

2. AN INTERVIEW WITH TALY MATITEYAHU – FOUNDER OF BLINK DATE

Valentine’s Day is coming up, love is in the air, and cuffing season is still rampant. If you are single or have friends who are trapped in the vicious spiral of swiping – no swiping – dating scene that is New York City, we may have found a respite for you.

There’s the plethora of New York City dating folklore. Who could forget the unhinged stories from “West Elm Caleb” to “The Tinder Swindler” and, of course, the OG, “The Hipster Grifter”? Ask around to any of your friends, and you’d be sure to find a story of swiping for hours, awkward dates, tumultuous flings, and, of course, the perennial act of deleting and reinstalling dating apps.

Alas, it’s not to say everyone in NYC is horrible, but I think we can all agree that modern-day dating is certainly flawed. Lawyer-turned-founder Taly Matiteyahu is on a mission to fix that.

FROM LAWYER TO BLINK DATE: TALY MATITEYAHU IS GIVING YOUR THUMB A BREAK
Blink is a new swipe-free dating app that allows daters to chat with a potential partner for ten minutes before they ever see a picture of them.

Launched out of NYC, the app already has a podcast, in-person events, and a 30% match rate. Inspired by a stint at a blackout restaurant where she ate in total darkness with strangers,  Taly realized how freeing an experience it was to talk and meet without preconceived notions.

We make judgments all the time based on everything from outfits to tattoos to height, and it’s just a shame because oftentimes people just aren’t necessarily what you think they are based on appearances.”

Today, Blink Date allows you to remove the nuisances of the modern NYC dating scene, like *ahem* ghosting and the never-ending doom texting…

2. SO ARE THEY TAKING OUR GAS STOVES AWAY?

Last year, Governor Hochul announced a $50 billion executive order to fight climate change in NY. It is the nation’s most aggressive bill on climate change (you hear that California?), tackling issues like single use plastic and recycling.

Additionally, a 2019 climate bill calls for a 40% reduction in the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030. That’s a lot of work to turn the entire state towards renewable energy

The biggest issue at the moment, is gas stoves. While many media sites are putting out headlines that they’re going to take your gas stoves away (umm, they’re not), here’s what you SHOULD know about the gas stove melodrama.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?
As part of Hochul’s climate change initiative, a new state budget proposal has been put forth that would require new buildings to be all-electric beginning in 2025. This means no more gas stoves only in new developments, 2 years from now.

The media has been stirring the pot, drawing the story into a contentious battle between Hochul and politicians, including the New York Post which made the most ridiculous cover page. This story should more so focus on the impacts of climate change, and what NY is doing to mitigate that.

WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK?
Mayor Adams is against the electric stoves, “Those of us who are good cooks – you know, people don’t realize that electric stoves can’t give you the right setting when you are cooking something that – if you’re a good cook”.

House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who apparently loves alliteration, said, “This is Hypocrisy Hochul at her finest” after discovering Gov Hochul still uses a gas stove at her home.

What do you think of Gov Kathy Hochul’s measures? Tell us your thoughts!

3.  DONATE TO EVERYTOWN TO END GUN VIOLENCE

While New York has the second strongest gun laws in the nation, in an average year, 870 people die by guns in New York.

In light of the horrible shootings in California this past week, we would like to encourage you to donate, get involved or learn more about what you can do to end gun violence in the US.

GOOD NEWS

Enough with the Expensive Shoeboxes!  Gov Hochul announced Housing as one of her main goals for 2023, including a 5-year, $25 billion housing program that will produce 100,000 units. We’re tired of the mini-shoebox apartments!

City Hall Plans to Shut Down Rikers – But the question is will Mayor Adams approve? Conditions in the jail are at their worst with 19 deaths last year, and staff shortages of 65%. Whatever happens, it seems criminal justice reform is at the top of City Hall’s list.

BAD NEWS

Oh Hey! It’s Congress, We’re Just on Hold…Again  Republicans are at a standstill for the vote over Speaker of the House. 19 Republicans are holding back from voting for Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Voting can go on forever until someone is elected…meaning Congress can’t kick off until a speaker is elected. Just roll the dice and vote on someone.

2. HOW TO SET YOUR GOALS FOR 2023

Step 1: Write them down! Some people say putting ideas to paper can sound like an activity for members of Oprah’s Book Club BUT we say, putting it to paper means you’re actually spending time on the goal. You’re spending time problem solving, focusing on how to make it a reality.

It’s like fixing a car or figuring out a rock wall or puzzle – you have to spend time thinking about it. While you might not need to dedicate the Malcolm Gladwellian 10,000 hour average of becoming an expert to every goal, it would make sense that you’d have to dedicate more than a fleeting moment here and there.

BUT WHAT SHOULD I BE SETTING?
Real quick on the goals for 2023. Sure, losing 10 lbs or having an extra $1000 in your bank account is great, but I want you to think about one thing, which is…are these goals bringing you closer to the person that you would like to become?

We often think about what we want to accomplish in metrics, but it’s not always guided by the TYPE of person we want to be.

According to America’s OG hipster philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation”. Much of the strife that we feel as humans is not because we didn’t get that perfect job, but because of misplaced value. We equate our success as human beings to C level suite jobs, Instagram perfect relationships, and the newest crop of iPhones.

We live our lives based so much on how society tells us to live, that we’ve inadvertently buried our own selves, that we no longer know who we are, or who we want to be, and worse how to find out.

SO, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The only way to find out what type of person you are, who you are is to do the things that you want to do.

So look at your list of accomplishments of 2022, look at the tangible goals that you have for 2023, and ask yourself…do these accomplishments define me? Or the future me? Are these things that help to get me closer to the type of person I want to be? Do I actually ENJOY doing these things?

You’ll have a gut check on how you feel. Even if you don’t know exactly what that is, you have some semblance, even if it’s tucked deep into the recesses of your jaded, sarcastic and blackened New York City heart. Check out our full guide in the link below.
